Sometimes it looks as if the road to justice is unattainable. Sometimes it looks as if greed and corruption will rule the day because when cast as shadows on the wall, justice and injustice are one.
Sometimes it feels like we are going through the motions of life. We go to work, pay our bills, go to church, grow old and then fade into oblivion, forever sleep--death. But there is more to life than the aforementioned.
Sometimes it feels like our society lacks the capacity of compassion and sympathy. When civic activist Joaquin Rivera dies on the emergency room floor and then is robbed, when insurance companies deny children and adults’ healthcare because of a pre-existing illness, and when a husband knowingly pricks his wife with a sewing needle tainted with HIV of his own blood--is apathy the new compassion?
Sometimes it feels like educating our children is a useless cause. Career politicians charge that not enough money is invested in public school education. However, the same career politicians vote “no” to increase funding to improve public school education. Parents argue that their children are not properly receiving the type of academic instruction and resources to compete globally and yet the same parents are not actively engaged in improving their children’s future.
Sometimes it feels like we are our worst enemy. We engage in behaviors that are counter-productive to our physical and spiritual growth. Whether it is “toxic relationships,” apathy, complacency, violence, drug and alcohol, and other addictions, we continue to implode and in the process negatively affect our family and the lives of others.
Sometimes it’s about standing and defending the rights of others, sometimes it’s about giving without receiving, sometimes it’s about standing alone for the greater good of society, sometimes it’s about respect when swimming in the ocean of disrespect and hatred, and sometimes it’s about peace in the storm of aggression and chaos.
In the end, though, we must “always” be held accountable and responsible for our actions because sometimes individually, we will be the outcome for a peaceful or chaotic society.

"Higher Education: The Art of Discrimination and Hypocrisy."
Lincoln University one of the first historically African American colleges founded in part because many of the institutions of higher education in the state of Pennsylvania and the United States would not admit African Americans based upon discriminatory policies. Now Lincoln has a policy of its own that discriminates against students that are overweight by not allowing them to graduate.
A requirement that the institution which has been in place since 2006 will now be enforced on students attending Lincoln University. Students with a body mass of 30 or more will be mandated to take a physical education class in order to receive a degree despite the fact that students have fulfilled the mandatory academic requirements that the school has set.
The irony is this policy is discriminatory, especially against African Americans who are the primary students attending Lincoln University. There is no compromising with discrimination, and I find it appalling that Lincoln University's administration would ostracize and belittle students attending the school based on their weight instead of their academic intelligence, integrity, and the positive impact they'll have on society.
And so it begins. First discrimination starts with an individual's weight, then their height, followed by religious beliefs and finally, their ethnicity. Perhaps the students should transfer from Lincoln University to an institution of higher learning where in the past they made no pretense of equality and integrity and where discrimination can be taken literally and without the base aloid of hypocrisy.
If the administration at Lincoln University was attempting to get the public's attention regarding this issue, they've succeeded--but for all the wrong reasons. The administrations have embraced this discrimination towards the students and have the audacity to call it compassion and respect to the student body.
Sadly, compassion and respect for students attending Lincoln University was the furthest things away from their thinking when they made such an inhumane decision. The civil rights movement worked endlessly to eliminate the stereotypes society portrayed against minorities. Lincoln University has set the cause of equal opportunity back 50 years by promoting the old stereotype that overweight people are not worthy of the same advantages as thinner people. Maybe next they can require their students to have plastic surgery in case they don't meet society's standards of beauty. Shame on Lincoln University for taking people who are vulnerable to the ignorance of others and perpetuating it in a formal school policy.

“Politics As Unusual.”
Every few years, would-be "career politicians" come along and make promises they have no intentions of keeping.
Citizens of the 42nd Ward & 180th District, I assure you that I make no promises and I have no interest in a "career" as a politician. What I am is a community servant that would be honored to represent you as State Representative.
I want to be your State Representative, and as such, want to combat crime. I will create a Community Defense League where our sole purpose is to rid our community of drug dealers, violent offenders, gangs, and other thugs who are compromising the quality of life for hard working and peace loving residents.
As State Representative, my administration will fight to bring good paying jobs and quality healthcare benefits to our community that has been experiencing high unemployment, high under-employment and lacking the most basic healthcare coverage for our families long before the current economic recession. In addition, we will listen and implement programs that will benefit senior citizens.
As State Representative, my administration and I will work to improve our schools fiscally, resourcefully and academically. We will work to increase funding for current and new after school programs that “effectively” prepare our children for college and a brighter future.
“Politics as unusual”; I will not participate or engage opponents in smear tactics and personal attacks and in following the plan of action we will end "politics as usual." If opponents believe that they can serve the citizens of the 42nd Ward & 180th District better than I can, then I welcome public debates based upon facts, and then let the people of Juniata Park, Kensington, Feltonville, Torresdale and Frankford decide. As State Representative my first and only priority is serving you.

"Let Us Remember Them No More."
So, you, the "Magnificent 39" voted "no."
You voted "no" to healthcare reform, but you really voted "no" to so much more. You voted "no" to affordable healthcare for the middle class and the poor. You voted ”no" to healthcare and in so doing, you voted "no" to providing every child in America with quality medical treatment. You, the Magnificent 39, also voted "no" to providing American citizens with a pre-condition illness for affordable healthcare.
You, the Magnificent 39 voted "no" to healthcare reform despite the fact that more than 50% of each of your constituents said ”yes" to healthcare reform.
It appears that the Magnificent 39 does not represent nor respect the interests of the "people" that elected them. You, the Magnificent 39, are now and forever the minions to the healthcare industry and you sold out Americans, the dead and the living, for profits pure and simple.
Conversely, you, the Magnificent 39, had a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to display the type of compassion and love for humanity that would have made Mother Teresa blush and left Gandhi speechless. When you voted "no" to healthcare reform--you voted "no" to humanity and your own humanity as well.
Remember the Democrats of the Magnificent 39 that voted "no" to healthcare reform. Remember them on Election Day 2010 and vote "no" to these individuals--and then let us remember them no more.

“The Economic Recession Did It.”
Mr. Mayor, so you think “we all need to get with the program because we are facing the worst economic recession since the Great Depression and there is no money?”
Sir, Philadelphians elected you to be a leader. Philadelphians chose you as mayor to lead our great city in a new direction which includes integrity and accountability. Unfortunately, Mr. Mayor instead of being a leader--you continue to pass the buck. You continue to astonish with being aloof to provide some of the most basic needs to the citizens of Philadelphia. Are you going to continue to blame the economic recession on every failure that you’ve accomplished?
I believe what SEPTA did by going on strike at 3:00am was “horrifically” wrong to its valued customers that rely upon the services they provide. But this transit strike was looming since the summer and with respect to SEPTA’s bus drivers, operators, customer service representatives and mechanics; they too have families to provide for. They decided not to strike during the summer months because of the economic recession and with the promise that their concerns of a better contract would be addressed in the near future. And yet, Mr. Mayor other than getting the aforementioned to postpone the strike until the Philadelphia Phillies could play all their home games during the World Series without disruption of public transportation, you and the SEPTA management did little or nothing to resolve the impending predicament that Philadelphians are currently facing and your response to the crisis? “We all need to get with the program because we are facing the worst economic recession since the Great Depression and there is no money?”
Conversely, in my humble opinion, Mr. Mayor, the city of Philadelphia and its citizens can no longer afford to tolerate your brand of leadership. We have endured from you threats of closing public libraries, public swimming pools, and the laying off of police and firefighters. You were however, successful in closing many of the after school programs in the city and although you claimed to reduce political corruption in the city, it continues to flourish instead.
Your leadership, integrity and administration have been absolutely dismissal since you’ve assumed office of the Mayor of Philadelphia. Instead of being accountable and effectively addressing the dilemmas’ that plague our great city, you present to Philadelphia the “criminal” and say the economic recession did it, and that is why you’ve achieved so little during your first-term.
Philadelphia can no longer afford you. Philadelphians can no longer afford you, Mr. Mayor.

“We Can Be the Outcome"
Nosotros mantenemos estas verdades las ser manifiestas, y que evidentes las son.
Primero, existe el aumento alarmante de jóvenes y adolescentes que abandonan sus estudios; en segundo lugar, el aumento catastrófico del crimen entre la juventud porque existe una falta de calidad en los programas disponibles después de la escuela; y, en tercero lugar, el aumento del crimen que ha asaltado nuestras comunidades. Todo esto ocurre en Filadelfia, y específicamente en la sección Parque Juniata del Distrito Electoral 42, y Distrito 180 de Filadelfia.
Los residentes del Parque Juniata han hablado y están de acuerdo que deseamos un futuro mas prometedor para nuestros hijos. Como Capitán de Cuadra, residente, y padre de un hijo, yo, también, quiero un futuro mas prometedor para nuestros hijos y una comunidad ¨libre del crimen.¨ En la sección del Parque Juniata de Filadelfia, no podríamos continuar bajo este camino destructivo que al corriente seguimos viajando, o´ nosotros y nuestras futuras generaciones estaremos condenados a la perdición.
Por esta razón, Yo estoy anunciando oficialmente mi candidatura para Representante Estatal del Distrito Electoral 42 y el Distrito 180 en 2010.
Por demasiado tiempo nuestras comunidades tienen que, y continúan a, soportar iniciativas de ¨arreglos rápidos¨ que proveen resultados limitados, y, en el proceso, nuestros hijos y la comunidad han sufrido inmensamente.
Como Representante Estatal yo planifico reducir el crimen en la comunidad con asegurar la financiación para iniciar patrullas de vecindario. Yo también pediré por la provisión de un aumento de presencia policial en nuestros vecindarios, además de construir una relación positiva entre los residentes y la policía por medio de una serie de ¨talleres municipales¨ y otras actividades entre los residentes y los representantes del orden público.
Como Representante Estatal yo aseguraré la financiación de programas después de la escuela de calidad con obtener fondos Estatales/Federales para programas existentes de calidad y nuevos programas ¨después de la escuela¨ de las bases que son esenciales para el crecimiento académico y social de nuestros hijos.
Como Representante Estatal yo aseguraré fondos estatales y federales para mejorar escuelas públicas academicamente y socialmente con re-implementar actividades extraescolares de nuevo en nuestras escuelas públicas, ubicadas dentro de nuestras comunidades.
Como Representante Estatal, mis objetivos son claros. Primero, quiero tratar con, y eliminar el aumento de crimen y la violencia dentro de nuestras comunidades por medio de iniciativas, que podrían producir resultados inmediatos y duraderos, trabajando con el Oficial Cruz y el Distrito de Policía 25. Yo quiero crear iniciativas sólidas para que sigan asistiendo los jóvenes y adolescentes a la escuela, logrando excelencia académica, y graduándose para que puedan subir a una educación mas alta o lograr un buen empleo. Mi meta es construir y fortalecer efectivos programas ¨después de la escuela¨ de calidad que les proveen a jóvenes y adolescentes con alternativas positivas que resultarán en ciudadanos productivos y exitosos dentro de nuestras comunidades y globalmente.
Yo no soy un desconocido dentro de nuestra comunidad. Al hecho, yo he implementado un número de estas ideas a lo largo de los últimos cinco años. Yo soy el fundador y organizador de una organización sin ganancias ni provecho, Academia de Campo de Sueño, la cual a trabajado con jóvenes numerosos y adolescentes en nuestra comunidad exitosamente subiendo sus niveles académicos y eliminando sus problemas de comportamiento por medio de mentores, tutores académicos, y deportes non-tradicionales. Este programa, el cual contiene voluntarios maravillosos, les enseña el liderazgo, fortalece la autoestima, y anima a la juventud que no abandonen sus estudios mientras planificando sus metas educacionales para el futuro. Yo he obtenido exitosamente subvenciones para mantener en marcha este programa dentro de nuestra comunidad.
En adición, Yo soy el fundador de la Coalición ¨Summit¨, (2007) una colaboración y asociación de organizaciones guiadas por el principio de construir relaciones creativas y confiadas con los residentes, organizaciones comunitarios de base, y de base en la Fe, oficiales de las escuelas, funcionarios públicos, y parientes para que realicen los estándares mas altos.
Quisiera compartir alguna información personal con ustedes para que puedan comprender lo que represento de nivel personal. Yo soy el instructor principal en una escuela acreditada de carreras enseñando Servicios Humanos. Estoy entrenando mas de 60 personas cada año para entrar a la profesión de ayudar y hacer una diferencia en la calidad de vida para gente quien necesita apoyo en esta ciudad. Me he ganado una Licenciatura en la Ciencia Política de la Universidad del Estado Cheyney, y una Maestría en Las Universidades Central y Eastern de la Universidad de LaSalle. Actualmente, soy un Asistente de Maestro en la Universidad de Nova Sur Este, donde también soy un estudiante para Ph.D en el campo de Análisis de Conflicto y Resolución.
Empezando el día de hoy, les pido que nos unamos para construir una coalición de comunidades que se dirigirán al futuro de la juventud, los adolescentes, y lo extraordinario de nuestra comunidad por medio de programas adicionales que crearán una moda de vida con cualidad.
Empezando hoy, les suplico con humildad que me apoyen y participen en mi candidatura para Representante Estatal por el Distrito Electoral 42, y Distrito 180 para el 2010, porque juntos, nosotros seremos el resultado.

En adición, Yo soy el fundador de la Coalición ¨Summit¨, (2007) una colaboración y asociación de organizaciones guiadas por el principio de construir relaciones creativas y confiadas con los residentes, organizaciones comunitarios de base, y de base en la Fe, oficiales de las escuelas, funcionarios públicos, y parientes para que realicen los estándares mas altos.
Quisiera compartir alguna información personal con ustedes para que puedan comprender lo que represento de nivel personal. Yo soy el instructor principal en una escuela acreditada de carreras enseñando Servicios Humanos. Estoy entrenando mas de 60 personas cada año para entrar a la profesión de ayudar y hacer una diferencia en la calidad de vida para gente quien necesita apoyo en esta ciudad. Me he ganado una Licenciatura en la Ciencia Política de la Universidad del Estado Cheyney, y una Maestría en Las Universidades Central y Eastern de la Universidad de LaSalle. Actualmente, soy un Asistente de Maestro en la Universidad de Nova Sur Este, donde también soy un estudiante para Ph.D en el campo de Análisis de Conflicto y Resolución.
Empezando el día de hoy, les pido que nos unamos para construir una coalición de comunidades que se dirigirán al futuro de la juventud, los adolescentes, y lo extraordinario de nuestra comunidad por medio de programas adicionales que crearán una moda de vida con cualidad.
Empezando hoy, les suplico con humildad que me apoyen y participen en mi candidatura para Representante Estatal por el Distrito Electoral 42, y Distrito 180 para el 2010, porque juntos, nosotros seremos el resultado.
Yo les prometo que si me prestan su apoyo, haré todo lo humanamente posible para voltear la corriente de nuestro vecindario para que podamos ser modelos de conducta para nuestros jóvenes con enseñarles que nos preocupamos los suficiente para dedicar nuestro tiempo por hacer una diferencia en sus futuros individuales. Esto no se trata de la política por lo tanto--esto se trata de hacer lo mejor con la bondad humana.

“I Will Not!”
Horrific, despicable, callous, and cowardly. When the news revealed the murder of 10-year-old Charlenny Ferreira by her father and stepmother, the human emotions are anger, outrage, and finally silence.
In the mist of our anger and outrage of the grotesque, inhumane treatment, and subsequent death of Charlenny Ferreira, we focus in on demanding justice to those distorted souls who perpetrated this unspeakable crime.
However, in a short time, our anger subsides and in the process, children like Charlenny Ferreira and Danieal Kelly are forgotten and designated to the back pages of history in human services and cast onto the mountain strewn with forgotten abused and dead children only to be remembered as "the unfortunate."
Charlenny Ferreira and Danieal Kelly are victims of two of the worst cases of child neglect known to civilization perpetrated by the parents, friends, and those individuals in human services that were suppose to protect them from real life “monsters.”
A travesty like this occurs when those who either choose to have children or choose a career in human services to protect the sick, the weak, the poor, the defenseless, and the frightened instead embrace malice, apathy, and unspeakable cruelty.
Conversely, can you imagine Charlenny and Danieal in their final days, hours, and minutes and seconds and how alone they felt with no one to speak on their behalf, to feed them, to bathe them...to love them unconditionally? The perpetrators ideology was these children lives were irrelevant and insignificant.
The penalties that will be administered against all those who conspired in this assault on Charlenny must be swift, severe, and just.
Justice will prevail. Justice MUST prevail.
Anyone that desires a career in human service, and what I believe is the greatest and most noble profession in the world must be held to a high standard of compassion, intelligence, reliability, responsibility, and ethics. NO Exceptions!
Never forget Charlenny Ferreira and Danieal Kelly!
