Every year the so-called fiscally sound officials at the School District of Philadelphia find ways to keep our public schools in deficit purgatory, despite the fact that over the last 2 years they've received enormous amounts of money to fix the broken and bleeding public school system.
Now Dr. Ackerman and Co. are asking for $100,000,000 and Mayor Nutter has taken up his sword and shield by attempting once again to tax sugary drinks to pay for the absolute incompetence of those overseeing the budget of the SDP.
This time its $100,000,000 and next time $200,000,000. Who is expected to pony up the money? You and me.
It appears that each time Mr. Nutter addresses the citizenry of Philadelphia he is accompanied by bad news. He's worst than the Grim Reaper; even the Grim Reaper is welcome relief sometimes, especially when appearing before someone who's gravely ill.
Mayor Nutter and Dr. Ackerman have stated that the $100,000,000 is needed "for the kids". Oh, so now it’s about the kids? These two remind me of those "Sponsor a Child" infomercials. I can see them now, "Hi, I'm Mayor Nutter and I'm Dr. Ackerman. Do you know that for $100,000,000 you can sponsor a child?"
City Controller Alan Butkovitz gave the SDP a perfect 10--as the worst at handling its finances! He now recommends independent oversight so in turn they want more money and no accountability? Oh, and Mayor Nutter says that he will be meeting each month with SDP officials so they can account for every penny being spent "For the children." Yeah, that dog and pony show will last for about six months and then Mr. Nutter will lose interest and the SDP will be back to continuing their fiscally irresponsible ways.
Haven't we had enough of this corruption from the very people that are supposed to use the funding to implement the type of education our children require to compete nationally and globally?
The $100,000,000 requested is not to repair the decaying infrastructure that is the Philadelphia public schools; nor is the money for the teachers that use personal finances to support their students and it damn sure isn't for "the kids". The $100,000,000 is for the children-- pretending to be adults.
